The life of Steve Jobs has proven to be a considerable draw for movie studios in recent years; Ashton Kutcher take on the role of the Apple founder in 2013’s Jobs, while Michael Fassbender is set to play Jobs in this year’s Aaron Sorkin-penned Steve Jobs.
But while both of these major studio projects focus on the the more “story-like” aspect of Jobs’ time at Apple, the upcoming documentary Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine takes a more unflinching look at the man and his impact on technology and the world.
The Man in the Machine, set for release this September, was directed by Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side), who just scored a massive hit for HBO with Scientology exposé Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.
Gibney’s film will focus on the side of Jobs that only close friends and family got to see, and the results look to paint a more complete, if somewhat flawed, portrait of the man behind some of the biggest technological innovations in history.
“His stuff was beloved, but it wasn’t that he was beloved,” Jobs’ high-school girlfriend Chrisann Brennan says in the trailer.
What’s more enticing – according to Wired, Apple’s board of directors and Jobs’ wife Laurene Powell declined to participate in the film’s production. That likely means Gibney will really be delving under the hood to give us both the bad along with the good in laying out his profile of the man.
Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine hits theaters and iTunes simultaneously on September 4.
