Deleted racially charged tweets from new Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen surfaced the night before Thursday’s NFL Draft.
Allen has since apologized for the tweets from his high school days, but Bills linebacker and team captain Lorenzo Alexander said Allen may need to give a good answer to properly explain his old tweets.
Monday, ESPN “First Take” co-host Stephen A. Smith said Allen should not be held responsible for tweets made when he was 16 years old, but argued if Allen were black, people would be making him explain himself.
“If it were a black kid, age 14, 15, 16, 17 years old, 13, 12 for crying out loud, it would require an explanation,” Smith argued. “Because, when black folks make mistakes it is a different level of accountability that comes attached to it. So, if you are a black person, you are thinking if that was a black kid that was about to be the number one overall pick or the number seven pick or what have you and racially insensitive tweets came from him, that black person wouldn’t be let off the hook with an apology, so why should this guy be let off? I understand that thinking.”
