Nothing pumps up Democrats like screeching about abortion, and in that spirit, Nancy Keenan or National Abortion Rights Action League Pro-Choice America took the stage tonight to wild applause. “We believe in funding family planning because it helps to prevent unintended pregnancy,” Keenan said. Then, referring to Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin, she said, “we believe that there’s no place in that room for politicians – especially politicians who don’t know how women’s bodies work.”

Keenan specifically cited Obama’s political photo-op with publicity hound Sandra Fluke as a triumph for his presidency: “I can tell you that he cares deeply about the next generation of young women in this country – his daughters, and everyone’s daughters. President Obama had the courage to stand with Sandra Fluke. Without hesitation, he defended her right to tell her story. Mitt Romney did not.”

This is sheer nonsense. Romney never told Fluke to shut up. He just didn’t defend her idiotic speech before Congress in which she said that religious institutions should be forced by government to pay for her birth control pills. And as for “caring deeply about the next generation of young women,” both Obama and NARAL support sex-selective abortion.

Keenan concluded by talking about her father’s blue collar background. What this had to do with abortion was anyone’s guess. But it made her sound sympathetic, and less like an elitist preaching the value of pregnancy termination.
