Harvard Study: 180,000 Deaths Yearly Worldwide from Sugary Drinks

Maybe Michael Bloomberg has a point. The Harvard School of Public Health has released a study indicating that 180,000 deaths worldwide occur every year because of high-sugar drinks like sodas and sports drinks. The high sugar content can lead to diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

The Global Burden of Diseases Study of 2010 showed that in that year, there were 133,000 deaths from complications with diabetes, 44,000 deaths linked to cardiovascular disease and 6,000 deaths that were caused by cancer.

The Harvard study separated the world into nine sections, which enabled them to find that lower or middle income countries accounted for 78% of the sugar-related deaths.

The American Heart Association held the Epidemiology and Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism 2013 Scientific Sessions, which was where the study was presented.
