Christie Secretly Has Lap Band Surgery, Will Hit NBC Nightly News to Explain

Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who is widely considered a frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016, has now revealed that he secretly had lap band surgery to lose weight – and he’s already dropped 40 lbs. Obviously hopping on the Al Gore/Ted Kennedy/Mike Huckabee bandwagon, wherein high profile politicians lose weight each time they consider running for president, Christie had the surgery in February after turning 50 in September.

For his part, Christie said that he decided to do it for his children. “I’ve struggled with this issue for 20 years. For me, this is about turning 50 and looking at my children and wanting to be there for them,” he said. He denied that he was dropping pounds to run for president: “It’s so much more important than that.”

Donors, however, disagree. One donor told the New York Post that Christie would be running, rather than waddling, for president: “He’s showing people he can get his weight in control. It was the one thing holding him back.” Before undergoing the surgery, the Round Mound of Gubernatorial Sound had a chat with New York Jets coach Rex Ryan, who also underwent the same surgery.

Christie will appear on NBC Nightly News tonight to discuss his surgery.
