The San Francisco Chronicle reports that all signs read stop for Sen. Barbara Boxer’s 2016 campaign. Boxer, 73, has not indicated whether she will run for re-election, but her campaign account has less than a paltry $200,000, as opposed to the $3.5 million she had amassed at the same stage in her last election campaign.
A veteran Democratic fundraiser close to Boxer reportedly said, “She is not running for re-election.”
John Burton, the state Democratic Party chairman, said Boxer has not told him what she will do, but he gave a clue at a Democratic Party fundraiser held Thursday night in San Francisco, the Chronicle reports. Noting that Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Kamala Harris–both possible replacements should Boxer step down–were in the audience, Burton informed the gathering, “When we meet here four years from tonight, we could be looking at one California governor and one U.S. senator.”
Other prospective candidates for Boxer’s seat include billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer, who has pledged vast sums of money to help Democratic candidates in 2014, Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg, and others.
Prospective candidates on the GOP side include two candidates capable of self-funding: Rep. Darrell Issa and business executive Carly Fiorina. Fiorina lost to Boxer in 2010.
