Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz was close to having a no-no today against the Tampa Bay Rays. Kelly Johnson hit a single to right field, shattering his bat, in the top of the eighth inning.
Sam Fulds hit into a double play, but Desmond Jennings followed with a double play, giving the Rays two hits. But Ben Zobrist ended the inning with a fly ball to left field.
Even though he missed it, Buchholz still had a stellar game. He only gave up two hits, walked four, and a career high 11 strikeouts on 103 pitches. He is now 3-0. In those three games he’s only given up nine hits and one run. This would have been his second career no hitter. His first was against Baltimore Orioles in his second career start on September 1, 2007.
Dustin Pedroia had three hits, including a lead off double in the bottom of the eighth. He scored a run off a Jeff Middlebrooks sacrifice fly to right field.
In the bottom of the third inning Mike Napoli doubled and Jacoby Ellsbury and Shane Victorino scored. Stephen Drew grounded into a force out, scoring Napoli and Daniel Nava.
The Red Sox won 5-0, improving their record to 7-4 and are on top of the AL East.
