Honey Badger Lands Sweet Deal
Tyrann Mathieu, aka "The Honey Badger," was drafted in the third round despite the brilliance he was able to show during his brief career at LSU. In turn, the Arizona Cardinals have decided to pay the defensive back more like the Heisman contender he was in 2011 than a player who was forced to take a year off due to continued problems with drugs.
The deal Mathieu signed is a four-year contract worth $3 million, more than $100,000 higher than last season's #69 overall selection, T.J. Graham.
Built into the deal, however, are certain protections that the Cardinals may need to take advantage of should the Honey Badger return to his old behaviors. The team backloaded Mathieu's signing bonus as a way of protecting the team financially should the player have drug issues in the NFL.
