Sochi 2014: US Snowboarder Arielle Gold Drops Out After Getting Hurt on Course

American snowboarder Arielle Gold withdrew from the 2014 Winter Olympics after she suffered a shoulder injury while practicing for the halfpipe.

“It’s definitely a bummer to see Arielle get hurt, because she’s such a strong rider. I would have loved to see there with us tonight,” said U.S. teammate Kaitlyn Farrington, who advanced to the semifinals.

The 17-year-old was considered a medal favorite in the event.

As a 16-year-old, she became the second-youngest rider to win the FIS World Snowboarding Championships and won bronze at her first X Games. She made the podium in six of 11 events.

Her brother Taylor Gold, 20, is also a snowboarder and placed eighth in the halfpipe on Tuesday. For the first time since it was introduced in 1998 no American male was on the podium for the event.

We wish Gold a speedy recovery.
