Roger Goodell read Jadeveon Clowney’s name as the first selection in the 2014 NFL Draft.
The crowd responded to Goodell’s announcement with cheers and Clowney responded with hugs and handshakes before donning a Houston Texans hat and embracing the NFL commissioner.
The Houston Texans, who lost fourteen straight games last year after winning a playoff game the previous season, bolstered their formidable pass rush by adding the South Carolina defensive end. Joining J.J. Watt on Houston’s defensive line, Clowney immediately makes the Texans pass rush the scariest in football.
In picking Clowney, the Texans valued the draft’s top talent over their top need. The Texans enter the 2014 season with a new coach and without a starting quarterback. The team figures to obtain a quarterback with the first pick of the second round or through a trade.
Clowney’s combines the size of a prototype pass rusher with the athleticism of a back. The 6’5” defensive end impressed at the NFL Combine by running a 4.5 forty and jumping 37.5 inches in the vertical leap.
“I’m glad to be a part of the organization and get to work and play some football,” Clowney told ESPN interviewer Suzy Kolber. “I’m just glad I can take care of my mom.”
