Blackwell, the former mayor of Cincinnati and fellow at the Family Research Council and the American Civil Rights Union, argued there was more than just the gun control aspects of this incident. He observed it was a number of weapons he used on his victims and that the focus should be on the mental health aspects.
“I wonder if I missed something,” Blackwell said. “My understanding is that some of his victims were stabbed to death. Other of his victims were hit by a car that he was driving and all of a sudden, one weapon is in fact under attack and not only is it under attack, people are talking about stepping on the constitutional rights of law-biding people.”
“We had a deprived individual and some people might say not only was he narcissistic, that he was also mentally disturbed,” he continued. “We don’t know that yet, but what we do know is people seem to be concerned is the information that was kept from the public based on his First Amendment rights and all of a sudden, the conversation is going to go to the constitutional rights of law-biding citizens, when the weapons that were used by this individual were a car, a knife and guns. Let’s talk about what it is in our system that doesn’t flag this sort of personality early in the process.”
“The media class is the wall that we have to climb over for our voices to be heard. Once our voices are heard, then democracy will happen.”
