The White House sternly addressed the hacking incident at Sony, insisting that artists in the movie industry should be allowed the right to free speech.

“What I can say is as a general matter, the president and the administration stand squarely on the side of artists and other private citizens who seek to freely express their views,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said during the daily press briefing on Thursday.

Earnest added that even productions with “comedic response” or “pretty biting social commentary” deserved the right of free expression.

Earnest did not confirm reports that North Korea was behind the hacking incident, but said that the case was still under investigation.
