American Future Project, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal’s issues advocacy group, is running ads starting today in Iowa touting the need for protection for religious liberty in America.
“Our religious liberty must in no way ever be linked to the ever-changing opinions of the public,” Jindal is quoted as saying in a speech he gave to Liberty University to open the ad. “We must understand that our freedom of conscience protects all Americans of every persuasion.”
The ad shows Jindal meeting with people across the country and in a church, and then quotes him from another speech. “These are rights endowed by our creator given to humanity by God,” Jindal said in that speech. “The United States of America did not create religious liberty. Religious liberty created the United States of America.”
The Iowa ad will run on cable television and online for one week in the nation’s first presidential state.
Jindal is quoted in the press release, provided to Breitbart News ahead of its public release, as saying he’ll announce soon whether he’ll run for president.
“I will make a decision on whether to seek the Republican nomination after the legislative session in Louisiana ends on 11 June,” Jindal said. “Whether or not I choose to run for our nation’s highest office, I will continue to defend the First Amendment and champion the cause of religious liberty.”
About religious liberty specifically, Jindal is also quoted as saying that America is at a “cross roads.”
“We are at a cross roads in American history,” he says in the release. “We must ask ourselves if we are going to stand up for the First Amendment, or forever lose our freedoms of conscience and faith. I am confident that the American people will fight to protect all of their constitutionally guaranteed rights.”
Henry Goodwin, American Future Project’s spokesman, noted that Jindal has been leading on the issue of religious liberty for quite some time.
“This is an issue on which Governor Jindal has been leading the public debate on for over a year,” Goodwin said. “In a speech at the Reagan Library in February 2014, he warned of the left’s coming assault on religious liberty. Now that prophecy has become reality.”
Jindal, a southern state governor, could be a serious contender for the GOP nomination down the road. Someone who’s clearly spent much of his time over the last few years learning issues inside and out, he may shock the political class if and when he announces a presidential campaign if he quickly gains traction.
