Donald Trump Wins Illinois Primary

Donald Trump is the projected winner of the Illinois Republican primary. With just over a third of the ballots cast, Trump was leading with 39 percent of the vote.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was second with 27 percent, followed by Ohio Gov. John Kasich with 21 percent. Sen. Marco Rubio was a distant fourth, with just eight percent of the vote.

As the statewide winner, Trump will receive 15 at-large delegates. Another 54 delegates will be awarded through votes for individual delegates in the state’s 18 Congressional Districts. It is still possible that either Cruz and/or Kasich end up with more delegates than Trump.

Cruz held five campaign rallies on the day before voting throughout Illinois, in a bid to contest for delegates. Kasich has been helped by support from current Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

It remains to be seen whether Cruz’s late campaign swing or support from Rauner for Kasich will translate into a batch of delegates for the two candidates.
