‘Country Over Party’: Republican Jeff Flake Cuts $100 Check to Radical Democrat Doug Jones

Outgoing Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) chose to fund the campaign of liberal Democrat Doug Jones to take the U.S. Senate seat once held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

“Country over party,” Flake wrote in a tweet containing an image of a $100 check made out to Doug Jones’s campaign in Alabama, with the same virtue-signalling line contained in the check’s memo line.

The moral high-tone is accompanied by a small donation of less than one-twentieth the maximum allowed under federal election laws.

Jones’s conservative Republican opponent, former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Judge Roy Moore, immediately replied:

Meanwhile, the direct responses to Flake’s stunt were overwhelmingly from liberals and Democrats letting him know just how little his gesture did to convince them of his sincere principles and how little they were won over by his unexplained appeal to “country:”

Flake will not seek re-election in 2018. Before announcing that decision, polls showed him almost certain to lose his party’s nomination to a challenge from the right.

Other than attacking Roy Moore and backing Democrat radical Doug Jones, Flake is using his last months in the U.S. Senate to work with Democrats to get as far-reaching an amnesty for illegal aliens as possible. He held up the Republican-controlled Senate’s single major legislative accomplishment of President Donald Trump’s presidency, passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, until he could extract promises from the leadership to consider giving amnesty to hundreds of thousands if not millions of illegals.

Flake’s decision to line up behind the Democrats, potentially costing the Republican Party its majority in the Senate, comports with other GOP establishment figures who have opposed Moore. He quoted with approval an admonition of Moore by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who also proved unable to win an election.

The two men’s aggressive signalling exercises come just as the Republican National Committee (RNC), headed by Mitt Romney’s own niece, Ronna McDaniel, is re-entering the race on Moore’s side. The latest polling has Moore comfortably ahead of Jones with just a week to go until election day.
