Gavin Newsom’s Spokesman Thanks Senator De León for ‘Admitting He Was Wrong’

Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom’s spokesman, Dan Newman, released a statement in which he thanked Senator Kevin de León for “admitting he was wrong.”

On October 21, Breitbart News reported that de Leon bowed the knee and embraced Newsom’s gun control proposition, Proposition 63, only months after he had rejected the same proposition and his chief of staff had described it as “burdensome.”

In the statement released Sunday, Newsom’s spokesman made clear that de Leon’s support could have come sooner, but they were happy that it came late versus “never.” He also made sure to mention that “some may accuse [de León] of being a self-aggrandizing hypocrite.”

Newman’s entire statement was published by the Sacramento Bee:

The gun violence crisis is too dire to worry about credit claiming and bandwagon-jumping, so even though some may accuse him of being a self-aggrandizing hypocrite, I’d simply like to thank KDL for admitting he was wrong and enthusiastically following Newsom’s lead. It’s certainly better late than never on such a critically important initiative, so if he spends the final week campaigning for Prop 63, I’m happy to forgive and forget that he obsessively tried to undermine it for the past year.

The Bee emphasized that “bad blood has been brewing between Newsom, a San Francisco Democrat running for governor, and de León, a rising Democrat politician from Los Angeles, since last fall, when Newsom unveiled his proposal.”

For a brief moment, it appeared the two had come to terms once de Leon threw his support behind Newsom’s proposition. But now, Newman’s statement intimates that Newsom and de León may still live in a house divided.
