On Monday a 42-year-old Healdsburg father was arrested on suspicion of drowning his 4-year-old daughter in the baptismal font of the Catholic church that sits across from police headquarters.

The father, Gerardo Mendoza Ordaz, was standing naked in the parking lot of police headquarters, holding his daughter’s body and calling for police around 8:30 pm Sunday.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, attempts were made to revive the girl, but she was pronounced dead about 90 minutes later.

Ordaz’s 9-year-old son was standing with him in the parking lot. The boy was “partially clothed” and is the only witness to the alleged homicide. The Chronicle reports: “Investigators believe Ordaz took his son and daughter inside St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in the 200 block of West Matheson Street … [and] he drowned the little girl inside the baptismal font that had about a foot of water in it.”

Healdsburg police chief Kevin Burke told the paper, “Our local Catholic church leaves the door to the premises unlocked late on Sundays for parishioners to go in and do legitimate worship. So, they were in there alone at the time.”

The deceased child was reportedly fully clothed.
