Four Letters to Remember During This Newt-Bashing Fad: I-R-A-N

Now that the circus has returned to try and take down another one of our serious candidates (Unless, as Rush pointed out, you’re Romney and the regime/media wants to run against you, or you’re Ron Paul because, as he once said to the socialist Lawrence O’Donnell when explaining why he gets “a lot of support from the left”: “The true progressive understands what I’m saying because I’m saying… stop this war on terrorism” – yeah, he actually admitted that his self-defecation foreign policy is “progressive”), some focus on a topic that actually matters would do our sanity some good.

In that regard, let’s revisit what Newt Gingrich had to say about “the strategy that a Gingrich administration would have to undermine and replace the dictatorship” in Iran.

When asked how he would do that, he replied:

Using all the techniques President Reagan and Prime Minister Thatcher and Pope John Paul II used to destroy the Soviet empire. I think our goal should be the replacement of the Iranian dictatorship with a maximum amount of effort to rouse students, to arouse young people, to arouse ethnic dissent, to finance every possible element of opposition, to build a radio and television-free Iran and to apply every possible economic sanction, including ultimately if necessary cutting off gasoline so that the regime collapses.

The Iranian opposition is already 3 moves ahead of us in this respect (see here, here and here).

He expanded on other measures at a latter debate: “we ought to have a massive all-sources energy program in the United States designed to, once again, create a surplus of energy here, so we could say to the Europeans pretty cheerfully, that all the various sources of oil we have in the United States, we could literally replace the Iranian oil. Now that’s how we won World War II.” And he also explained that he would bomb Iranian nuclear facilities “only as a last recourse and only as a step towards replacing the regime. No bombing campaign which leaves the regime in charge is going to accomplish very much in the long run.”

To be honest, this is the most coherent and Reaganesque plan to tackle the mullahs I’ve heard yet. It could have come right out of one of our editor’s old books (this one or this one) – especially now that the ring leader of the Newt-bashing circus, Nancy Pelosi (who claims to have old secret Newt corruption to leak), is exposed so thoroughly as a crook in his new one.
