NHL eliminates more regular season games

The National Hockey League wiped out more games from the 2012-13 regular season schedule Monday, bringing the total number of games lost in the three month lockout to 526.

Games from December 15 through December 30 were the latest to be eliminated in the lockout which began September 16. The annual outdoor Winter Classic and All-Star Game were previously cancelled.

Three days of lengthy negotiations last week between owners and players got the two sides talking seriously again but they ended without a collective bargaining agreement.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said last Thursday the league had made concessions but wouldn’t budge on specifics, including the length of the CBA deal and length of player contracts.

The league wants a 10-year labour deal with an opt-out clause after eight years, while the union has offered an eight-year contract with the ability to opt out after six.

As for player contracts, the NHL wants to limit them to five years, seven if a club re-signs its own athlete.
