US Army expands EADS helicopter orders

The US Army has given Europe’s EADS a new $181.8 million order for Lakota helicopters, expanding an ongoing contract for the key utility aircraft, EADS said Wednesday.

The army gave the European aerospace manufacturer’s US unit, EADS North America, a fresh contract option to deliver 34 more UH-72A Lakotas, taking the total ordered to date to 312, of which 243 have been delivered.

The aircraft are produced at EADS’s American Eurocopter plant in Columbus, Mississippi.

“This latest contract award is a reflection of EADS North America’s commitment to on-time, on-cost performance with the Lakota, a proven, flexible aircraft that is flying every day to meet the army’s mission,” said EADS North America chief executive Sean O’Keefe.
