Sussex Police conducted controlled explosions on a suspect vehicle in a car park at Gatwick Airport, causing disruption for travellers.
The operation was carried out on a Renault van in the airport’s North Terminal car park after staff reported it to be suspicious, but police assured commuters that there was no suggestion of a terrorist threat.
“There is nothing to link the vehicle with terrorist activity and there is a strong possibility that the two men dumped the van as they headed for a flight,” said Inspector Gary Medland, from Gatwick Police.
“There is no suggestion that there are any other threats to the airport and both police and security staff are actively checking all areas,” he added.
“We are aware that this is likely to cause significant disruption to people arriving or departing North Terminal by car”.
Officers decided to carry out the blasts as they were unable to find the driver or see inside the vehicle, which arrived at the airport around 2.40pm.
