Casillas benched by Ancelotti for Madrid start

New Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has continued with his predecessor Jose Mourinho’s decision to bench Spanish captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas in favour of Diego Lopez for Real’s league opener against Real Betis.

Casillas, 32, was expected to make his first league appearance since January after being first ruled out by a hand injury and then overtaken by Lopez in Mourinho’s pecking order.

However, Ancelotti has also chosen to stick with the 31-year-old Lopez despite the fact he was not even selected in Vicente del Bosque’s Spanish squad for their trip to Ecuador in midweek.

The Italian also surprisingly chose Dani Carvajal ahead of Alvaro Arbeloa at right-back, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo makes his 200th appearance for the club since signing from Manchester United four years ago.
