Jaguars sack head coach Mularkey

The Jacksonville Jaguars sacked coach Mike Mularkey on Thursday, with new general manager David Caldwell saying he wanted a “clean restart” for the struggling NFL team.

The Jaguars were 2-14 in Mularkey’s only season at the helm, closing the season with five straight defeats.

Mularkey came into the job after four years as offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons. However, the Jaguars’ offense was unimpressive for much of the season, with 2011 first-round draft selection Blaine Gabbert continuing to struggle at quarterback and star running back Maurice Jones-Drew missing the second half of the campaign with a foot injury.

“Mike is an excellent coach and I am sure he will succeed in his next stop in the NFL,” Caldwell said. “However, I must do what I believe is best for the Jacksonville Jaguars and immediately explore every avenue possible to turn our football team around.

“For that to happen as seamlessly as we want, and as quickly as our fans deserve, I feel it is in everyone’s best interests for an immediate and clean restart.”

Caldwell’s announcement came two days after he took over as general manager in place of Gene Smith, who was sacked the day after the regular season ended.
