Canada adds jobs, but jobless rate up

Canada added 52,000 jobs in September but the unemployment rate still edged up 0.1 percentage points to 7.4 percent as more people entered the labor market, the government statistics agency said Friday.

The figure beat analysts’ forecast of 15,000 new jobs and a jobless rate of 7.3 percent, unchanged from the previous month.

Statistics Canada said Ontario and Manitoba saw employment gains while Saskatchewan province shed jobs.

New workers were hired in retail and wholesale trade, construction, information, culture and recreation, as well as agriculture. Meanwhile job losses were recorded in “other services,” business, building and other support services, and natural resources.

Self-employment also spiked.
