British snowboarder dies after French Alps crash

A young British woman has died five days after a snowboarding accident in the French Alps in which she suffered heart and respiratory failure when she crashed and was stuck in a snowdrift.

Emily Watts, a 26-year-old design student from the eastern English county of Suffolk, died on Thursday in a hospital in Annecy where she was taken after the accident at Chamonix, the local PGHM mountain rescue service said.

PGHM Captain Emmanuel Vegas said she was taken to the hospital in critical condition after being found unconscious in the Grands Montets in the Mont-Blanc massif.

An investigation has been opened into the circumstances of her death.

In London, a spokeswoman for the Foreign Office confirmed her death.

According to British press reports, Watts, who was known as Mimi, had recently moved to Chamonix to find a job before the new ski season.
