Thousands of travellers heading from Britain to Europe faced disruption on Wednesday as anti-austerity protests on the continent led to flight delays and cancellations.
British Airways and Easyjet were among the airlines which cancelled or rescheduled services to Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon and Thessalonaki in Greece owing to a general strike organised by the European Trade Union Confederation.
Flights from Heathrow and Gatwick were affected.
Expressing regret over the disruption easyJet said: “We are proactively trying to minimise disruption. However, we would like to warn customers that they could experience delays to their travel plans.”
British Airways advised passengers to check their website for the latest flight information.
“We are doing all we can to minimise the disruption to our customers,” the airline said.
“We are also looking at putting on larger aircraft to help as many customers as possible. We are advising customers to check ba.com for the latest flight information,” it added.
Unions and activists said they were observing a “Day of Action and Solidarity” against tight fiscal policies introduced by governments in the region.
