Tens of thousands of rail commuters face cancellations and huge delays on Tuesday after damaged power lines caused chaos on one of the country’s busiest routes.
Thousands were left stranded late Monday when the East Coast mainline route, which connects Edinburgh and London, suffered mysterious damage to its power lines near Hitchin.
Engineers were set to work through the night to restore power but warned that delays could extend well into Tuesday.
Train operator East Coast cancelled all departures out of London King’s Cross and was running alternative services to the north.
“No East Coast trains will run between London King’s Cross and Peterborough,” it advised.
The operator admitted it did not know what had caused the problem, but said it was “ruling nothing out”.
