Philadelphia star Roy Halladay, a two-time Cy Young Award winner as top pitcher, underwent successful right shoulder surgery, the Major League Baseball team said Thursday.
Halladay had the shoulder operation on Wednesday, a day after his 36th birthday, according to a statement released by the Phillies.
“He will begin a progressive rehabilitation program and if all goes well, he may possibly begin a throwing program in six to eight weeks,” said Phillies director of medical services Michael G. Ciccotti.
In seven starts this season, Halladay went 2-4 with an 8.65 earned-run average. He last pitched on May 5 against the Miami Marlins.
Halladay won the Cy Young Award as the American League’s top pitcher with Toronto in 2003 and won the National League version of the award with Philadelphia in 2010, the year he pitched a perfect game against the Marlins and a playoff no-hitter against Cincinnati.
