Arizona pitcher Ian Kennedy was banned 10 games on Friday as Major League Baseball handed out eight suspensions over the brawl between the Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.
MLB senior vice president Joe Garagiola jnr cited Kennedy for intentionally throwing at the head of Zack Greinke after game officials had issued a warning for similar behavior in the game on Tuesday.
Arizona infielder Eric Hinske was suspended for five games for leaving the dugout and “aggressive actions” in the fracas.
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly and Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson both received one-game bans.
Dodgers pitcher J.P. Howell and utility man Skip Schumaker each received two-game bans, Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire was banned for two games and relief pitcher Ronald Belisario for one.
MLB also fined the Dodgers for allowing players on the disabled list to leave their dugout during the brawl in the seventh inning of the contest.
The trouble started in the bottom of the sixth, when Kennedy hit the Dodgers’ rookie sensation Yasiel Puig in the face with a pitch.
Puig remained in the game, but the incident sparked retribution from Dodgers hurler Greinke, who drilled Miguel Montero in the back in the seventh.
Both benches cleared briefly after Montero was hit, then in the bottom of the seventh Kennedy hit Greinke in the shoulder and angry players poured onto the field.
Punches appeared to be thrown, with Puig seeming to take a poke at Arizona Hinske.
McGwire could be seen clutching Gibson’s collar during the melee, which lasted several minutes.
All eight of those suspended were also fined, and Greinke, Puig, Montero and Arizona outfielder Gerardo Parra were also fined.
