Humberto, churning far off land, has become the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, US forecasters said early Wednesday.
The Category 1 storm was located about 310 miles (500 kilometers) west-northwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands, according to the National Hurricane Center.
“Humberto becomes the first hurricane of the season over the far Eastern Atlantic,” the Miami-based center said.
However, no coastal watches or warnings are in effect.
Packing maximum sustained winds near 75 miles (120 kilometers) per hour, Humberto could strengthen later Wednesday before weakening Thursday.
The hurricane season lasts from the start of June to the end of November.
