Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson named veteran midfielder Paul Scholes on the bench as the two men prepared to bow out of the game at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
Ferguson, 71, takes charge of United for the 1,500th and final time at The Hawthorns, while 38-year-old Scholes is hoping to make his 718th appearance for the club before the pair enter retirement at the end of the season.
As promised in his final pre-game press conference, Ferguson started with Anders Lindegaard in goal and with Jonny Evans alongside Phil Jones at centre-back.
Wayne Rooney, who has asked to leave the club, was left out of the squad as his wife, Coleen, is preparing to give birth to the couple’s second child.
In total, Ferguson made six changes to the team that beat Swansea City 2-1 in his final home game last weekend, with Antonio Valencia, Alexander Buttner, Anderson and Tom Cleverley also coming into the side.
West Brom manager Steve Clarke made four changes to the side beaten 4-0 at Norwich City, with Billy Jones, Liam Ridgewell, Graham Dorrans and Chris Brunt all recalled.
