Striker Miroslav Klose scored his 68th international goal in Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Austria to equal Gerd Mueller’s 39-year-old record for Germany.
The 35-year-old Klose scored in the 33rd minute on his 129th appearance for Germany at Munich’s Allianz Arena when he converted Thomas Mueller’s cross.
Klose’s 68th international goal leaves the Lazio striker level with the now 67-year-old Mueller, who scored the last of his goals for West Germany with the winner in the 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in the 1974 World Cup final in Munich.
Remarkably, Mueller’s haul came in just 62 internationals while Klose has needed more than double the amount of matches to score the same amount of goals in an international career spanning 12 years compared to Mueller’s eight.
Having scored a combined 14 goals at the World Cups in Japan and South Korea in 2002, Germany in 2006 and South Africa in 2010, Klose is just one short of Brazil star Ronaldo’s record for the most goals in World Cup finals.
