Police: Suicide bombing hits Jakarta bus station, killing officer

May 24 (UPI) — Police in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta said a police offer died and at least four others were injured in a suicide bombing near the Kampung Melayu bus station late Wednesday.

At least four people, including officers, were badly injured, Indonesian National Police Deputy Chief Cmdr. Gen. Syafruddin told reporters.

Syafruddin said all those injured are police officers but a hospital spokesman said two officers and two civilians were injured. No group has yet taken responsibility for the attack.

‘”There are five victims. Five policeman, one of whom was killed,” Syafruddin said. “I want to express my sympathies. An explosion has occurred. For the time being, we are treating it as a suicide bombing. We believe there is a single perpetrator. We have not yet identified the perpetrator.”

Four of those injured are being treated in East Jakarta’s Premier Hospital in Jatinegara, while another two are being treated in the Hermina Hospital, The Jakarta Post reported. Both hospitals are located less than a mile away from the bus station.

Premier Hospital spokesman Sukendar said one of those injured required immediate surgery.

East Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Cmdr. Andry Wibowo said police launched an investigation into the incident.

“There were two blasts at around 9 p.m., close to each other,” Wibowo told the local MetroTV station. “From the damage I can see the explosions were pretty big.”
