Newtown Football Team Moves Championship Game to Honor Shooting's Anniversary

Newtown Football Team Moves Championship Game to Honor Shooting's Anniversary

When the 2013 football season started, the Newtown high school Nighthawks dedicated it to the victims of Adam Lanza’s heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Now, at season’s end, they are 12-0 and have asked the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) to move the championship game from December 14th to December 13th if they win out and get to play in that game.

The students do not want to play on the first anniversary of Sandy Hook as a way to show respect to those who were killed in Lanza’s crime.

According the AP, the CIAC concurred and has agreed to hold the state championship on December 13th if the Newtown football team “reaches the final at Central Connecticut University in New Britain.”

While gun control proponents are looking for ways to politicize the anniversary of that horrible day, the Newtown Nighthawks are looking for a way to honor those who were lost.
