As Breitbart Texas reported Sunday, Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-TX) has announced he will challenge John Boehner (R-OH) in his bid for re-election as Speaker of the House. Gohmert was one of 72 co-sponsors of a resolution that denounced the Common Core standards and the attempt by the federal government to coerce states into adopting the standards through competitive grants and waivers from restrictions of the No Child Left Behind law.

H. Res. 476 was introduced by Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) in February of last year. The measure’s working title was named as:

Strongly supporting the restoration and protection of State authority and flexibility in establishing and defining challenging student academic standards and assessments, and strongly denouncing the President’s coercion of States into adopting the Common Core State Standards by conferring preferences in Federal grants and flexibility waivers.

The resolution was referred to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Gohmert has voted against: $40 billion for “green” public schools; an additional $10.2 billion for federal education and Health and Human Services project and allowing the courts to decide whether “God” could be mentioned in the Pledge of Allegiance..

He voted in favor of reauthorizing the DC opportunity scholarship program and for parents’ rights to educate their own children.
