PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Coahuila — A team of cartel gunmen operating in this border city shot and killed a government informant and his driver. The victim survives a prior murder attempt in 2015.

The murder took place when 42-year-old Lauro De Hoyos Perez traveled in a black GMC pickup near the Malvinas neighborhood in this border city located just south of Eagle Pass, Texas. The team of gunmen shot at the SUV killing an unnamed driver and fatally wounding De Hoyos. Emergency personnel rushed De Hoyos to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Law enforcement sources consulted by Breitbart Texas revealed that De Hoyos previously worked as an informant with Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (PGR).  In 2015, a team of gunmen tried to kill De Hoyos after he stopped to buy fried pork cracklings or “Chicharrones” at a local stand along one of the city’s most traveled avenues, Breitbart Texas reported. The gunmen pulled up and fired at his SUV before driving off. At the time, De Hoyos was struck by a bullet in one of his legs and tried to drive himself to a local clinic but was unable to control his vehicle and rolled over.

It remains unclear if his role as a government informant led to De Hoyos death.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by “J.M. Martinez” from Coahuila.
