Birdman Director Uses Oscar to Push Immigration Reform

Sunday at the the 87th Academy Awards, while accepting the Oscar for best picture, “Birdman” director  Alejandro González Iñárritu used his speech to push immigration reform.

Presenter Sean Penn joked upon opening the envelope, “Who gave this son of a bitch a green card? ‘Birdman.'”

First joking by referencing last year’s Oscar winner for best director,  Alfonso Cuarón, who won for “Gravity,”  Iñárritu  joked, “Maybe next year the government will inflict some immigration rules to the Academy. Two Mexicans in a row, that’s suspicious, I guess.” Then after thanking family and friends, the director of Birdman said, “Finally, I just want to, I want to take one second, I just want to take the opportunity, I want to dedicate this award for my fellow Mexicans, the ones who live in Mexico. I pray that we can find and build government that we deserve. And the ones that live in this country who are part of the latest generation of immigrants in this country, I just pray that they can be treated with the same dignity and respect of the ones who came before and build this incredible immigrant nation. Thank you very much.”
