During CNN’s coverage after the first presidential debate, CNN Commentator and former Obama advisor Van Jones argued that while Donald Trump “lost his way” at the end of the debate, “Most people probably only watched the first 20 or 30 minutes, and in those first 20 and 30 minutes, he was very effective.” And trade is “a big weak spot” for Democratic presidential nominee former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Jones said Trump “fell for it, and he talked about stamina. And he didn’t talk about the looks, which was probably smart for him not to, since that was offensive. He talked about stamina, stamina, stamina. He was sniffling. He was drinking water. He was — he didn’t seem to — he seemed like he needed a nap near the end.”

He then stated, “Most people probably only watched the first 20 or 30 minutes, and in those first 20 and 30 minutes, he was very effective. He was very good on the trade stuff. That is a big weak spot for her, it’s a big pain point in our party, and he was great.”

Jones continued that Trump “got tricked off into this weird bizarre stuff, where he…lost his way. Let me just say one more thing, it was very important for her to raise gender, it was important that she raised it, and the way that she raised it, and I think it was important for her to raise the fact that not only does he say insulting things to women, he says insulting things to women of color, and I thought that was well raised.”
