White House officials are recommending the President veto the amnesty bill pushed by the so-called Common Sense Coalition, a few hours before the radical legislation is expected to face a vote.
Eight business-first GOP Senators have signed up in support of the pending “Rounds-King” amendment which directs officials at the Department of Homeland Security to stop enforcing immigration law against the population of roughly 12 million illegals — and against new illegals who rush into the United States before July 1. The pro-amnesty amendment may get a vote in the Senate on Thursday afternoon or evening.
The Statement of Administration Policy says:
Preventing enforcement with respect to people who entered our country illegally before a date that is in the future would produce a flood of new illegal immigration in the coming months. The Amendment would undermine the safety and security of American families and impede economic growth for American workers …
The Administration cannot support the Schumer-Rounds-Collins Amendment because it is not only dangerous policy that will harm the Nation, but it also fails to deliver on the clear promise the Administration has made to the American people.
If the President were presented with an enrolled bill that includes the Amendment, his advisors would recommend that he veto it.
The establishment media has portrayed the proposed legislation as moderate and bipartisan, and describes it as a product of the “Common Sense Coalition” of progressive and business-first GOP Senators. The amendment is portrayed as moderate even though it is backed by Sen. Chuck Schumer, the Democrats’ minority leader in the Senate, and even though it does not significantly reform the unpopular visa lottery or chain-migration programs.
The legislation does provide some funding for a border wall but it does not close any of the legal loopholes which allow migrants to flood into the United States while claiming asylum. It offers citizenship to more than 3 million migrants, including people who say they are aged 43.

The promised sanctuary for future illegal immigrants is buried at the end of the 64-page “Immigration Security and Opportunity Act.
The amendment is supported by Schumer and is the Democrats’ amnesty bill in the Senate this week. It is called the Rounds-King amendment because it is sponsored by GOP Sen. Mike Rounds and Democratic-leaning Sen. Angus King from Maine.
The Republicans who signed their name to Schumer’s sanctuary amendment include Schumer allies Sen. Lindsey Graham and Sen. Jeff Flake.
But the amendment is also signed by Maine Sen. Susan Collins, South Dakota Sen. Mike Rounds, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Tennesee Sen. Lamar Alexander, Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson, plus Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner, who is actually the chairman of the GOP Senators’ 2018 election campaign.
