Ratings: Fox Dominates, CNN Trounced on Election Night

More proof that CNN is dying came on Election Eve 2013. Tuesday night, the cable news network came in a distant third place behind first place Fox News and second place MSNBC. In both total viewers and the 25-54 demo, CNN had nothing to brag about and much to worry over.

In total viewers, while Fox handily beat both CNN and MSNBC combined between 5pm and 11pm, MSNBC came close to doubling CNN’s viewership — except for the 8pm hour. CNN’s Anderson Cooper was able to scrape up 659,000 viewers, compared to Chris Hayes’ 873,000. It was much closer during the 11pm hour, as well.

In the demo, Fox again dominated, but CNN was able to squeak only two narrow wins over MSNBC during the 8pm and 10pm hours. The rest of the night, MSNBC won, but not by much.

Election Day morning brought terrible news for CNN’s “New Day,” which averaged only 281,000 total viewers and a humiliating 64,000 in the demo.

Jeff Zucker might owe former-morning host, Soledad O’Brien, an apology.
