Leaders From North, South Korea Gather For Highest-Level Talks In Five Years

On October 4, leaders from North and South Korea gathered for their highest-level talks since 2009.

North Korean leaders–including Hwang Pyong So, the country’s second-in-command–traveled to South Korea for “the closing ceremonies of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games” and met with South Korean Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae.

According to The Korea Times, the North Korean leaders met with Ryoo “shortly after arriving in Incheon” and then met again with Ryoo, along with national security adviser Kim Kwan-jin, during the luncheon for closing ceremonies later in the day. 

The North Korean leaders also met South Korean Prime Minister Chung Hong-won just before the closing ceremonies began.

The details of the discussions were not released but both “sides agreed to hold another round of high-level talks later this month or in early November to discuss issues such as the reunion of families separated by the 1950-1953 Korean War.”

The October 4 talks came after more than a year of mounting tensions and squaring off between North and South Korea.

In December 2013 Breitbart News reported that North Korea sent a fax threatening South Korea with a military strike. Since that time, North Korea has threatened to resume nuclear tests and has conducted tests of new “cutting-edge ultra-precision tactical guided missiles.” 

The relationship between North Korean and China has continued to strengthen during this time. 

South Korea has subsequently strengthened its relationship with the US, even to the point of creating of a joint military unit to destroy North Korean nukes in the event of war.
