On June 30, Virginia Delegate Joseph D. Morrissey (D) was indicted “on charges that he had an improper sexual relationship with a teenage girl” in 2013.
In that same year, Morrissey “brandished an assault rifle during a [House of Delegates] floor speech advocating greater gun control.”
According to ABC 7 WJLA, the prosecutor in the case, Spotsylvania County Commonwealth Attorney William Neely, told the court that Morrissey “and the 17-year-old girl had sex multiple times in the legislator’s law office in August 2013.” He said Morrissey and the teen “texted their friends about the encounter.”
Moreover, Neely said Morrissey followed up on the encounter by texting the 17-year-old and asking for “a nude photograph of her to help him fantasize about their next encounter.”
An investigation into Morrissey’s relationship with the girl began after her father “called police … to check on the welfare of his 17-year-old daughter.” Police then found the girl with Morrissey at Morrissey’s home.
Both the lawmaker and the teen “denied any impropriety.”
