On January 26, Aljazeera ran a special report on the state of gun control in America, which included a quote on how Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is making efforts to “undo the damage the NRA has done.”

According to Aljazeera, gun control is finished on the federal level until 2016. The Republican victories on November 4, 2014, all but guaranteed this to be so. But at the state level, groups like Moms Demand Action can still secure victories.

In explaining how they can do this, Aljazeera pointed to Washington state’s adoption of I-594–a state-level initiative that institutes the universal background checks Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) failed to secure at the federal level. They also pointed to the more recent example of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder (R) bowing to gun control pressure and vetoing SB 789–a bill that would have corrected ambiguities in that state’s concealed carry law.

Even though SB 789 actually added increased protections for victims of domestic abuse, gun control groups successfully cowered Snyder on false premises and were able to get him to do their bidding.

According to Aljazeera, Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts said, “We’ve been able to kill bad bills, and we’re supporting good. This is a marathon. It’s not a sprint. It’s going to take months and years to undo the damage the NRA has done.”

Aljazeera also quoted Third Way’s Sarah Trumble stating that the confirmation of Vivek Murthy as surgeon general is also important for gun control because “it means a lot that the highest doctor in the land is concerned about it and recognizes it as a public health issue.”
