Two doctors in Mexico died in a span of 24 hours while treating patients with the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Governor of Hidalgo announced the first fatality Wednesday after a physician employed by the state’s public health system passed. The doctor was the third Coronavirus fatality in the state. Governor Omar Fayad himself announced on March 28 that he contracted the virus and was going into quarantine at  home.

The second doctor was a 45-year-old in Monclova, Coahuila, a statement from the State Health System announced.

The border state of Coahuila has close to 60 cases with approximately 36 of those in Monclova. At least 21 of those are in one government-run clinic. On Wednesday night, Mexico’s health officials announced they would initiate a full lockdown of the hospital to spray the building inside and out with hydrogen peroxide.

The spread of the virus and the lack of protective equipment has led to several protests by medical workers in various Mexican cities.
