A former Republican California Congressman is seeking to qualify a statewide ballot initiative in 2020 that will bar non-citizens from voting in state and local elections.
Doug Ose, the former Sacramento Congressman who spent six years in the House, reportedly submitted a proposal that would amend California’s election law so that “only persons who are United States citizens may register to vote and vote in an election,” according to a Wednesday evening Los Angeles Times report.
“It’s very simple. I don’t think noncitizens should be voting,” Ose reportedly said.
Ose filed his proposal a week after San Francisco started to register non-citizens to vote in its school board elections. His measure would also bar non-citizens from voting local elections like school board races.
According to the Times, Ose must “collect 365,880 valid voter signatures to get his proposal on the 2020 statewide ballot,” and Ose is optimistic that he can do so.
“There’s no shortage of people who are interested in being involved,” Ose reportedly added.
