Michelle Bernard: Black People Weren’t Considered Unpatriotic Until Kaepernick Knelt

During Sunday’s “AM Joy” on MSNBC, Michelle Bernard, the president and CEO of the Bernard Center for Women, said that black people were not considered “unpatriotic” until Colin Kaepernick decided to exercise his First Amendment right to protest the national anthem.

“[P]eople say black people were not considered lazy until they stop working for free, well black people were not considered to be unpatriotic until Colin Kaepernick decided to take a stand and say that he is using the First Amendment right, one of the most important rights under the U.S. Constitution that we all love, to say that we will not stand for the murder of unarmed black men and black boys all over the country,” Bernard told host Joy Reid.
