Actress Gwyneth Paltrow revealed last year that she and rocker Chris Martin had separated after ten years of marriage due to a “conscious uncoupling,” which left many confused regarding her terminology. The actress spoke to Howard Stern Wednesday to explain.

The term reportedly comes from philosopher Dr. Habib Sadeghi and his wife, Dr. Shahrzad, Paltrow told Stern on his SiriusXM radio show. It means to separate with “minimal acrimony.”

“This has become the biggest term,” Stern joked. “Did you know that the word conscious uncoupling would become so big? I use it now!”

Paltrow told the host she regrets not further explaining the term, which was derived from the philosophy of the doctor. “First of all when I sent out the thing, I didn’t give it context,” she explained.

“It’s a very noble idea and it’s a great thing, I think, to try to do for your kids it’s working,” she said. “It is kind of a goofy term, and I didn’t know it was going to cause such a big thing.”

The actress added that when the family spends time together, she seeks love and forgiveness for Martin – and hopes he wants the same things.

“We actually have a really strong friendship and we laugh and have fun,” she finished. “We’re lucky in that our parenting styles and philosophies overlap a lot.”
