The rural home of leading Brexiteer Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg has been vandalised by thugs, who stuck sex toys to his car and sprayed anarchist symbols and slogans including “shut up and die” on his property.
Other nasty slogans were graffiti painted on the car, windows, and garage at the Somerset house, including “posh scum” and “sh*thead”, the Sun reports.
Condoms were also left hanging from a Christian cross in the MP’s garden, and the vandals painted an anarchy symbol on his Range Rover. It is believed the Mr Rees-Mogg and his family were holidaying in the U.S. at the time.
He posted a photo of him and some of his family atop the Empire State Building in New York on the 1st of August.
However, he was unfazed after the incident over the weekend, telling the newspaper: “It appears to be someone who can’t hold their drink – and probably not Catholic.
“I do not think it advances political debate and it is unclear what particular point they wanted to make.
“Fortunately everything has been cleaned up so the consequences are minimal. It is probably drunken excess.”
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that they are looking into the incident. He said: “We’re investigating a report of criminal damage at a property in West Harptree.
“The incident happened sometime between 4 p.m. on Wednesday, 1 August and 8 a.m. on Thursday 2 August.
“Graffiti was sprayed on a building and a car, while damage was also caused to the garden.
“House to house enquiries have been carried out while crime scene investigators have attended. Enquiries are ongoing.”
Mr. Rees Mogg leads Parliament’s European Research Group – a 60-strong group of Tory MPs who back a clean exit from the European Union (EU).
Since the referendum, he has become one the most prominent defenders of the vote to leave the European bloc and was for a time the favourite among Tory party members to replace Theresa May as Prime Minister.
He is also known for his Roman Catholic faith and socially conservative views.
