Anti-Israel Poster Campaign Targets London Underground

Anti-Israel activists have targeted the London Underground for a poster campaign marking what they call ‘Israeli Apartheid Week’. 

The self-described “wave of truth” alleges British-made arms were used to “massacre” Palestinians during Israel’s last operation against Hamas. An estimated 500 posters appeared on the transport network over the course of Sunday night under the banner ‘Apartheid is Great Britain’.

Images circulating on social media reveal it is part of a four-poster campaign that is operating without official sanction from London Underground or Transport for London.

Some posters suggest the BBC’s reporting is biased towards Israel, while one targets security company G4S (pictured above), which operates some prisons in Israel and the West Bank.

The posters accuse the firm of “securing Israeli apartheid” and doing “whatever it takes to secure profits”. Images on social media on Sunday suggested the adverts were driven by Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS) activists who have taken to Twitter to call for support for their campaign using the hashtag #IsraeliApartheidWeek

The organizers behind the week describe their activities on their website:

“Each year, Israeli Apartheid Week takes place across more than 150 universities and cities. It aims to raise awareness about Israel’s ongoing settler-colonial project and apartheid policies over the Palestinian people. Panels, film screenings, and creative actions build support for the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.”

This is not the first time that anti-Israel campaigns have appeared in British public life. As Breitbart London has reported, earlier this month the violent anti-Israel protesters who disrupted an Israel Society event at King’s College, London were banned from the campus after it was concluded they “crossed the line” in carrying out their demonstration.

The Oxford University Labour Club (OULC) has also been under fire for supporting Israeli Apartheid Week.

The Guardian reports more than 30 former and current chairs and executive members of OULC and others have signed a letter condemning the club’s decision to endorse Israeli Apartheid Week. The signatories say Israeli Apartheid Week promotes a “one-sided narrative, seeking to dismantle the only majority-Jewish member-state of the United Nations”.

The letter goes on: “We are troubled by OULC’s decision and feel compelled to speak out. In a climate of rising antisemitism, we have a duty to oppose initiatives that foster an intolerant political culture which intimidates Jewish students.”
