White House Suggests New Sanctions an Attempt to Start War with Iran

As a bipartisan group of senators continue to press for new sanctions against Iran, the White House suggests the real goal is to start a war.

According to the LA Times, National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said if supporters of the sanctions “want the United States to take military action, they should be up front with the American people and say so.”

Meehan suggested that apart from wanting military action, “it’s not clear why a member of Congress would support a bill that closes the door on diplomacy and makes it more likely that the United States will have to choose between military options or allowing Iran’s nuclear program to continue.”

The group, called United Against a Nuclear Iran, responded to the White House criticism: “It is wrong for the White House to continue questioning the integrity and motives of anyone who supports more sanctions.” The group added, “It is nonsensical and out of bounds to say that a bipartisan majority of U.S. Senators secretly wants war with Iran.”
